Also called lucid dreaming. Meaning: you dream and are aware of it. The kick of it is that you can control the entire dream - to be utterly geeky: it's like a holodeck, only weirder.
It is actually useful for a number of things. It's a good way to get rid of nightmares (there are studies and courses on that already), it can be used as a practise ground... and it's not entirely without possible side effects. I really wouldn't recommend a "this is a dream, I can do whatever I want" stance.
There are a number of sites on it and of course it has a wikipedia entry. This site isn't necessarily the best and may sound slightly esoteric, but I like how it summs up basic ideas.
